Man’s North Carolina Divorce Ruled Invalid & Subsequent Marriage Voided
A Greensboro man is in quite a marital, legal and financial pickle after a district court judge ruled his November North Carolina divorce and subsequent January marriage invalid. After getting a notice finalizing his divorce in November, Vernon Chrisp remarried some two months later, according to a story in the News-Record. Upon receiving the notice of the finalized divorce, Chrisp’s ex-wife Cherrie immediately called her attorney, Cynthia Hatfield, who asked the court to reconsider so her client could get a fair share of the couple’s assets. However, Hatfield missed a key court date due to a scheduling mix-up.
All of this craziness allegedly occurred unbeknownst to Vernon Chrisp, who said he figured his Greensboro divorce was finalized and eventually got married again. However, courts generally do not penalize defendants for their attorney’s mistakes, and Cherrie Chrisp’s challenge of the finalized divorce was allowed. On Tuesday, Judge Wendy Enochs signed a court order making the November North Carolina divorce invalid. Enochs specifically noted that Vernon Chrisp filed a response to his ex-wife’s request before his second wedding. Since it’s illegal to be married to two people at the same time, the judge voided the January marriage, leaving Vernon Chrisp in a state of confusion.
Chrisp said his January bride is quite distraught with the current situation, and that he’s unsure if the couple will or won’t have to marry again. He also said that he is nearly broke after spending a lot of money on his January marriage, and is obviously not looking forward to going through more divorce proceedings. Cherrie Chrisp was not reached for comment about the crazy developments of this divorce process.
