State of Washington to Hire Divorce Lawyers?
The Washington Supreme Court is currently considering whether the state should hire divorce lawyers following one woman’s claims that she lost custody of her three children during her divorce because she couldn’t afford legal representation. Brenda Leone King says her rights were violated by the decision from three years ago and thus appealed the decision. She is specifically seeking a new trial with a court-appointed lawyer, a notion that taxpayers would have to foot the bill for if the Washington Supreme Court were to comply and deem acceptable. An Associated Press story detailed how the Washington attorney general’s office is opposed to a new trial based on its argument that there’s no right to counsel during child custody battles. King’s appeal is currently being handled pro bono by a Seattle law firm, and we’ll keep you updated on the latest developments with this situation.
