  • Matter of He Said Versus She Said in Bitter Texas Divorce

Unfortunately yet realistically, the divorce process can become a matter of he said versus she said, and the results of such in-fighting can be quite damaging in many areas beyond one’s personal life. A sheriff in Texas says he knows this firsthand. An Amarillo.com story details the case of Potter Country Sheriff Mike Shumate, who claims that his ex-wife’s allegations in their messy divorce are affecting his reputation and career. Shumate has claimed that his ex-wife Beverly Shumate has vowed to destroy him by alleging that he took bribes and kickbacks on the job. These allegations have prompted a 15-month investigation by the FBI, and Mike Shumate has felt the damage as his second-in-command has resigned to avoid being linked to him.

Specifically, Chief Deputy Ken Farren has publicly distanced himself from Shumate, who described the move as a sense of betrayal. The Amarillo.com story detailed how Farren said that he wanted to “clean himself” of Shumate upon his resignation last week. Shumate has claimed his innocence of any wrongdoing and said that the divorce has left him with $80,000 in credit card debt. Beverly Shumate has alleged that her ex-husband has failed to make payment on the credit cards and has sought a court order for him to do so. Michael Shumate was also investigated last year for allegedly assaulting his wife during the middle of their divorce, but he was never indicted.

If you’re thinking about divorce, this bitter divorce case is a good example of the path not to take if you want to move forward with your life.
