Nigerian Man Ordered to Divorce 82 Wives Granted Reprieve
According to Africa.Reuters.com, a Nigerian court has granted a temporary reprieve to a Muslim preacher after Bida’s leaders tried to force him to leave the area unless he gets a divorce from all but four of his 86 wives.
The preacher, Mohammed Bello, legally challenged the local chiefs and Muslim leaders because they were forcing him to leave his wives and 170 children if he didn’t follow Islamic sharia law. The law mandates a man may not have more than four wives at a time.
The temporary reprieve will give Bello protection from banishment until the court decides if his rights have been violated. The preacher claims that threats have violated his right to life and personal liberty. His case has caused a lot of controversy in Africa because Muslim scholars say that he should only have up to four wives at any given time who are treated equally.
