  • Man charged with bigamy

According to MailOnline, Cheal Sweetman, 39, was sentenced to 11 months in prison and suspended for 18 months after his wife discovered that he was married to two women at the same time.  Sweetman and Juliet Bond were married December 31, 2004, but Bond’s marriage to his third wife, Amanda Madden, had not been dissolved.

Bond discovered her husband to be a bigamist when she opened a letter issuing the divorce proceedings between Madden and Sweetman.  A letter had been sent to the couple’s house from Madden’s solicitors that expressed concern that Sweetman and Madden were not formally divorced.  Bond then reported her husband’s bigamy to the police.  The Aylesbury Crown Court heard the case, and Deputy Circuit Judge Roger Conner said that people like Sweetman threatened “one of the building blocks of society.”
