GA names new State Child Welfare Chief

On November 3, Georgia’s human resources commissioner announced the Mark Washington would be the state’s new child welfare chief.  Washington is the former head of the child welfare system in Kentucky.

According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Washington will have to face severe budget cuts that could threaten staffing potential and services currently offered to families.  Washington plans to focus on improving the work family and children services does with troubled families so that children will not have to be brought into foster care.  The new child welfare chief also plans on providing more children in foster care with homes through adoption or by returning the children to relatives.
