Single Parenting and Summer Vacations
Children have been excitedly awaiting the day when there’s “no more school, no more books.” And now the bell has rung for the last time, and many parents are scrambling for ways to keep the kids busy during the next three months – while not driving themselves completely crazy.
As a single parent, planning a fun summer vacation can be more complicated because the living expenses are dependent solely on one parent’s income, but that doesn’t mean you can’t give your child a vacation to remember.
Some tips when planning a summer of fun:
- It’s important for your child to spend time with both parents after divorce. While your child is visiting your spouse, take this time to get any work or house work you need to do done so when your child is visiting you, you can spend time doing fun summer activities. Consider rearranging parenting schedules so your child can spend time with the whole family on both sides.
- With the state of the economy, many families are staying closer to home this summer, but according to many travel agencies, now is the time to go. It’s best for you plan ahead and pick a destination that fits in your budget. Make a temporary itinerary to help you estimate costs. Look for deals through travel Web sites, and check out the visitors bureau to get deals, discounts and free events in the area. When planning your trip, try to travel during the week. Plane tickets are much cheaper Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during the times that aren’t in high demand.
- When you have child custody, find activities for your child to do while you can’t be with them. Since you are a single parent, you may not be able to spend the entire time with your child when you have custody. Check with your local parks and recreation department to find a class or trip or activity your child can do while you’re busy.
- Take time to relax with your child. The entire summer doesn’t need to be planned out. Don’t stress about making sure the summer is perfect. In the end, your child will remember the time you spend together, so make sure you are around to enjoy it with him or her. Remember: It’s summer vacation for you too!
