Record Marriage Highs and Divorce Lows for Australia
Australia is famous for many things: the Outback, kangaroos and The Wiggles. But now they have a new fame to be recognized for: Successful marriages.
According to official figures recently released, marriages in Australia are at a 20-year high, and the annual divorce rate is at its lowest since 1992.
According to these comprehensive statistics, last year Australia saw just over 118,000 registered marriages and conversely more than 47,000 divorces were granted, computed together to bring Australia’s divorce rate to 2.2 per 1000 people – the lowest result in the past two decades.
Interestingly, the agency which releases these statistics, The Australian Bureau of Statistics, further explained that their data refines that during the 20-year measured period, Australian couples continued to delay marriage.
“2008s average age for women was 27.7 years and 29.6 years for men.”
Australia’s average first-time marriage ages were 24.2 years and 26.3 years respectively in 1989.
Does this infer that the more successful marriages are those that are entered into later in life? Or is this simply an aberration of information? There really is no telling, but one can speculate.
Meanwhile, when it comes to the act of breaking up – filing for divorce – the ABS data reveals joint applicant divorces have continued to rise. These types of divorce represent 35.2% of all divorces, and the median length of marriage to divorce last year in Australia was 12.3 years.
Maybe it is the communal nature of being on an island which helps to create this dynamic or possibly just an underlying tone of mutual respect which serves a proud group of people. In either event it is worth noting that even in divorce the people of Australia trend to stay civil with one another.
Whether this impending trend is a result of one society’s draw towards a more family-typed existence where the sanctity of marriage dominates the need for professional growth, or it is merely a result of a mass standing of dedicated individuals towards love and commitment it is certain that the rest of the world should take notice of Australia’s dominance within the marital world. And if you’re an Australian contemplating a career choice, divorce lawyer is probably not recommended.

Regarding the rise in the number of joint divorce applications; a single application takes longer as you must wait for a response. If you have legal representation it will cost you more and Court appearances are more likely to be required if a couple does not agree to apply jointly. That statistic is unreliable as a measure of amicability as convenience and cost often underscore the reason the applications are jointly made.
