Wife of Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman Files for Divorce
The wife of New York Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman has filed for divorce from her high-profile husband after allegations revolving around Cashman’s second extramarital affair hit newspapers last week.
Mary Cashman, 42, recently filed divorce papers in Stamford, Connecticut, claiming that her marriage to the man who makes the personnel decisions for the Yankees “has broken down irretrievably.”
In her divorce petition, Mary Cashman is seeking permanent alimony, a 50-50 split of the couple’s property, and joint custody of their 13-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son.
During the past year, while her husband has been dogged by public accusations of more than one affair, Mary Cashman has been living apart from her husband in the couple’s $3.7 million mansion in Darien, Connecticut, according to a report from the New York Post.
Cashman’s divorce filing comes on the heels of bizarre court proceedings involving Louise Meanwell, who claims that she had a yearlong affair with Cashman that ended after the 44-year-old general manager refused to leave his wife for Meanwell.
And, while Meanwell’s friends back up her claims that she often visited the Yankees’ offices and spent a lot of time with Cashman, her credibility has been called into question by recent criminal charges.
Sources indicate that Meanwell appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court last week, facing charges of stalking and allegations that she extorted thousands of dollars from Brian Cashman.
Prosecutors in her case also claim that Meanwell deluded Cashman with hundreds of text messages demanding that he pay for an unspecified medical procedure. Cashman allegedly sent two payments her way—one for $4,000 and one for $2,000.
Meanwell was unable to post bail, which was reportedly set at $200,000, so she is awaiting trial from jail in Rikers Island. According to sources, Meanwell has faced criminal charges in other states for related stalking claims.
The alleged dalliance with Meanwell, however, is only the beginning of Cashman’s problems. The New York Post claims that Cashman was romantically linked in 2009 to a woman named Kim Brennan.
Photos showing Cashman and Brennan embracing were published on the sports website Deadspin last year. Brennan later divorced from her husband after he allegedly grew suspicious of his wife’s relationship with Cashman.
So, while Cashman may no longer have to worry about fielding blackmail requests from Meanwell, he is facing a difficult divorce process in the coming months. As the Yankees’ season approaches, Cashman will have much more on his plate than the business of baseball.
