After dominating tabloids for several months with speculation about their impending divorce, Kobe and Vanessa Bryant have decided to stay together, according to a report from the Los Angeles Times.
Of course, the celebrity couple’s divorce went beyond mere speculation. Vanessa Bryant formally filed for divorce from her husband in December 2011, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for the requested split.
And the three homes owned jointly by the couple in the Los Angeles area were all promptly transferred into Vanessa Bryant’s name after she filed for divorce, according to sources.
To make matters even more concrete, Vanessa Bryant had already sold one of the homes that had been transferred into her name for more than $3 million, according to local real estate records.
Sources say the home reportedly had more than 6,000 square feet of living space, which included five bedrooms, six bathrooms, and five fireplaces, and was located in the prestigious Pelican Ridge neighborhood.
In addition, they had started dividing their other assets, and had taken shots at each other through various gossip magazines.
But Vanessa and Kobe Bryant, who now live in Newport Beach, were not ready to end their 10-year marriage, and have reportedly called off the divorce after spending tens of thousands of dollars during the process.
According to a statement released on Vanessa Bryant’s Instagram page, the pair were “pleased to announce that we have reconciled.” She also noted that the divorce action “will be dismissed” and that she and her husband were “looking forward to our future together.”
The couple’s change of tune is fairly baffling, and not only because many observers believed their pending divorce proceedings in Orange County had almost reached the finish line.
When rumors of the divorce began to circulate, many sources believed the split was due to multiple infidelities on the part of Kobe Bryant.
This was partially confirmed by the basketball star’s rape trial several years ago, in which Kobe Bryant was acquitted on the criminal charges but was revealed to possibly be a less-than-faithful partner to his wife.
But the couple, who met in the early stages of Kobe Bryant’s remarkable career, seem willing to work through their differences and avoid a potentially costly divorce.
And the cancellation of the divorce provides a sliver of good news for the shooting guard, who is currently struggling through a very frustrating season with the underachieving Los Angeles Lakers.
All is not well on the basketball court, but Kobe Bryant will at least be able to avoid a civil court for the foreseeable future.
