Katy Perry Claims Russell Brand Gave Notice of Divorce via Text

Several months after their divorce rocked national headlines, Katy Perry and her former spouse Russell Brand are making waves with a series of new allegations.

In a recent interview, Perry claimed that Brand notified her of his intentions to filing for divorce through a casual text message, according to a report from the Los Angeles Times.

Sources say the 28-year-old singer told Vogue magazine during a recent chat that she hadn’t heard from Brand, a 38-year-old actor and comedian, “since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011.”

While admitting that her former husband was a “very smart” and “magical” man, Perry said she found her husband entertaining until “he started making jokes about me and he didn’t know I was in the audience, because I had come to surprise him at one of his shows.”

The use of his wife as a source for jokes may have triggered the beginning of end for the couple, who met in 2009 at the MTV Movie Awards, according to sources.

Perry and Brand married in 2010, but contacted a divorce attorney shortly thereafter. Sources say they officially split 14 months after their marriage, claiming that they suffered from irreconcilable differences.

The pop singer, however, does not pin all the blame on Brand. During her Vogue interview, Perry admitted that she was also “on the road a lot” and thus had to “claim my own responsibility,” despite the fact that she “tried to come home as much as I could.”

Perry also noted that the conspicuous absence of Brand from her documentary, “Katy Perry: Part of Me,” wasn’t edited to remove her husband at the time. Rather, he was simply absent for the lengthy shooting of the film.

“I felt a lot of responsibility for it ending, but then I found out the real truth, which I can’t necessarily disclose because I keep it locked in my safe for a rainy day. I let go and I was like: This isn’t because of me; this is beyond me. So I have moved on from that,” noted Perry, somewhat cryptically.

While the couple’s breakup was painful, Perry has moved past the divorce and is pursuing acting work in addition to her tireless efforts on the pop music scene. According to reports, Perry will provide the voice for Smurfette in “Smurfs 2,” which will be in theaters soon.

As for her love life, Perry told sources that she’s not in a relationship, but that she believes she “will be loved again” because she knows that she’s “worth it.”
