Divorce is tough, emotionally and financially. When you're going through a divorce, you may feel like you're alone in the world, but the truth is that you're in very good company. Roughly half of marriages in the U.S. today end in divorce, and even the rich and famous aren't exempt. In fact, sometimes it seems that their marriages crumble harder and faster than anyone's. Here are just a few of the recent, notable or bizarre splits in the sports, music, entertainment and business worlds:
Celebrity Divorce Updates for July 16, 2008
Alex and Cynthia Rodriguez Make Divorce Headlines
Cynthia Rodriguez, wife of New York Yankees baseball star Alex Rodriguez, last week filed for divorce in a Miami-Dade Family court, accusing Rodriguez of “extramarital affairs” during their marriage and emotional abandonment. Meanwhile, the tabloids are producing strippers who claim and/or deny they were with Rodriguez during his marriage. Rumors are also flying that Rodriguez once told a friend that pop star Madonna is his “soulmate.” Madonna is battling tabloid divorce rumors about her own marriage to Guy Ritchie. Cynthia and Alex Rodriguez were married in 2002, with a pre-nuptial agreement. They have two children together. Rodriguez is reportedly worth an estimated $300 million.
Christie Brinkley’s Divorce Reportedly Settled
Just one week into a nasty divorce trial, model Christie Brinkley and estranged husband Peter Cook have reportedly reached a settlement agreement and hope to present it to a judge soon, according to PEOPLE magazine. The gossip website TMZ also reported that Cook’s willingness to settle increased as reports that a private detective who tailed him was about to testify in court. A judge will need to approve the settlement, if it was indeed reached. The couple split two years ago and have two children together.
Catty Florence Henderson: I’ll Counsel Christopher Knight’s Divorce
Former Brady Bunch mom Florence Henderson, who has claimed to be a “therapist” but is really a hypnotherapist which requires very little schooling, has told reporters that she counseled former Brady Bunch child star Christopher Knight, who was Peter Brady on the Brady Bunch, not to marry his current wife Adrianne Curry. Henderson claimed that Knight is “like a son” to her and that when she appeared on his “My Fair Brady” television show, she told Knight not to marry Curry. “They didn’t take my advice. Maybe I will counsel the divorce,” she reportedly said. Curry and Knight have been married since 2006 and have not filed for divorce. Adrianne Curry has been curt when commenting about Henderson in the past, both on the “My Fair Brady” show and in her blog.
Hulk and Linda Hogan Wrestling in Court Again
Linda Hogan claimed recently that estranged husband Hulk Hogan was stalking her, yet when he was supposed to sign papers to close on a Las Vegas condo for her, the Hulk was nowhere to be found. Linda Hogan has filed a motion in a Clearwater, Florida courtroom asking to hold the Hulk in contempt of court for failing to close on the$4 million condo, on which he reportedly placed an $800,000 deposit. Linda has said that Hulk had agreed to close on the condo and has no right to withhold the cash. Hulk’s attorneys claim that closing on the condo would be financially irresponsible because of a lawsuit against the family by John Graziano, who was injured in a car driven by Nick Hogan, the Hogans’ son. This divorce will not be dull.
Heather Mills Wants a Pre-Nup if She Ever Marries Again
You can’t ever believe what the tabloids write, but this one is about as unbelievable as it gets. “Now” magazine, a British tabloid, has claimed that Heather Mills has told friends that if she ever gets married again, she’ll have a pre-nup. For sure, for sure! The pre-nup would of course protect the millions Mills earned from her divorce from Sir Paul McCartney, who did not sign up a pre-nup before his four-year marriage to Mills, whose divorce settlement earned her more than $10 million per year for being married to the former Beatle. A friend reportedly said, “Heather…realizes she could attract a man who isn’t with her because he loves her but because he loves the lifestyle.” Hmmmmm……..

Madonna and Guy Ritchie Reunite in Manhattan; Deny Divorce Rumors
In case you missed it this week, pop guru Madonna and filmmaker Guy Ritchie are absolutely, positively, NOT divorcing. Just to prove it, the couple affectionately stepped out together to have dinner at New York City restaurant Cesca, where they held hands and snuggled. Madonna’s spokesperson Liz Rosenberg has said the couple has “no plans” to divorce. Rumors have linked Madonna to another man, and prior reports have surfaced that Madonna met with Paul McCartney’s divorce attorney, Fiona Shackleton about a month ago. One report suggested that Madonna will divorce Ritchie in November, when her current tour ends. Rosenberg, for the record, has in the past initially denied reports that have turned out to be factual. Stay tuned.
Britney Spears Wants a Yard for Her Sons Near Ex Kevin Federline
"The Insider" has reported that it obtained court documents explaining why Jamie Spears, father of Britney Spears and conservator of her estate, has decided to sell Spears’ current Beverly Hills home. Apparently the pop star and her pop are seeking a quieter residence that would be more suitable for her two children. Insider claims Spears is looking for “a larger backyard” with better access to parks for the kiddos. Britney Spears and Federline divorced last year, with Federline being granted full custody of their two boys after Spears displayed erratic behavior for several months. Britney Spears has recently been re-granted court-supervised visitation rights after they were removed from her last year. The next custody hearing is scheduled for July 15.
Linda Hogan Says Estranged Husband Hulk Hogan is Stalking Her
Linda Hogan has entered a plea with a Pinellas County circuit court to amend an order that bars husband Hulk Hogan from two of their homes because she claims he is stalking her. Last February, a circuit court judge approved an order barring Hulk Hogan, whose real last name is Bollea, from entering the couple’s beach condo and one of their homes. According to Linda, however, the Hulk has been harassing her while remaining out of the area from which he’s barred. Linda claims in a motion that Hulk has been telling police he’s only “passing by” the area or “running errands” but is really antagonizing her by parking on the border of the property and making verbal assaults at her. A hearing is set for next week.
Bill Murray and Wife Granted Quickie Divorce
Perhaps Bill Murray and his wife Jennifer Butler Murray could teach Hollywood a thing or two about divorce. A judge in Charleston, South Carolina has already signed off the divorce settlement between Jennifer Murray and comedian Bill Murray. The couple filed for divorce last month and has been married for ten years. The Murrays were able to agree that Jennifer would be granted custody of the couple’s four children and keep two of the couple’s homes. Salman Rushdie, currently in divorce proceedings with Lakshmi, has been knighted by the Queen of England and can now use the title “Sir” before his name. Lakshmi, as his wife, would have been able to use the title “Lady Rushdie” but will have to settle for “Top Chef Host” instead. Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe Finalize Divorce
It’s likely to be considered Hollywood’s mildest and least controversial divorce: actress Reese Witherspoon and actor Ryan Phillippe are now officially divorced with all custody and financial issues wrapped up, according to documents filed this week in a Los Angeles Superior Court. Though details of the document are sealed, the couple is now officially divorced and share joint custody of their two children. Charlie Sheen Apologizes for Voicemails to Ex-Wife Denise Richards
Perhaps actor Charlie Sheen needs to read Alec Baldwin’s new book about the frustrations of divorce. Sheen’s abusive voicemails to ex-wife Denise Richards in 2005 have been recently published on the Internet, prompting Sheen to publicly apologize. Baldwin’s abusive voicemails last year to his daughter, Ireland, in which he called his daughter a “thoughtless pig,” prompted Baldwin to write a book about the frustrations of divorce. In Sheen’s voicemails to ex-wife Denis Richards, the f-word was used repeatedly, as was the C-word and the N-word. Sheen issued a statement after the voicemails became public, saying, “I deeply apologize by my choice of words to all I have obviously offended; especially to Tony Todd, an African American, who was my best man at my first two weddings." Sheen, on his third marriage now, also added, “For the record, my children did not show up today for a custodial visit without explanation. So three and one half years later, the reasons that caused the anger and frustration displayed on that voicemail continue to be manifested on a daily basis.” Sheen and Richards have two children together. Nice.

Mrs. McGreevey Wants a Million; Mr. McGreevey Offers Zero
Those warring McGreeveys can't seem to help themselves when it comes to making headlines. In a divorce that is arguably more bitter than McCartney and Mills, Jim McGreevey, the "I'm a Gay American" former Governor of New Jersey, and his estranged wife Dina Matos McGreevey are still duking it out in the media and the courtroom over-well, nearly everything. In closing arguments for their financial hearings, Dina Matos McGreevey's divorce attorney asked for more than $1 million in support. McGreevey's attorney, on the other hand, argued that Dina should get zero. Everything from custody of their child, their parenting abilities, whether Matos McGreevey "knew" her husband was gay, Dina's appearance on the Oprah Winfrey show, Jim McGreevey's enrollment into a seminary (for heaven's sake!) and even the objects contained within artwork has been in dispute during the couple's four-year divorce extravaganza. In an even more bizarre McGreevey divorce moment, Union County divorce court judge Karen Cassidy commented publicly that, "This case, in the scheme of things, is probably not the worst case on my docket," Cassidy said
